Principal is Proactive

The new school year is approaching and Principal, Angela, wants to be proactive with school team members, parents and the community, because last year the school-wide attendance and parental involvement was at its lowest.

Angela hosts a meeting with team members, parents and community members to discuss situations that may be impacting the students’ ability to achieve. She explains the purpose of the meeting and asks teachers and parents to hold conversations about home and school life. Many parents expressed that they hold one or more jobs at various hours. Because of this, they have trouble getting their children to and from school. Teachers expressed that many students were late or absent last school year which affected the student learning outcomes.

Angela and many community members talked about how this problem could be solved. The local bus transportation suggested adding another two stops to pick up the kids whose parents could not get them to school and see if that had a positive impact on attendance.

A month has passed since the public transportation was able to help with getting students to and from school. The attendance has increased compared to last year and teachers even noticed engagement has been positive. They will meet again with the community to discuss the progress.
