The Teacher Listens to a Parent and Suggests Tutoring

Teacher, Evelyn, has learned that little Elijah is being raised by a single mom who works a lot. Elijah’s mom notices that he never has any homework and his grades do not reflect mastery. When they are finally able to meet to discuss the dynamics of his household and grades, they can discuss the concerns.

Evelyn tells Elijah’s mom that he is a master with science concepts and has a curious mind. She also celebrates his ability to complete the independent practices with little to no assistance. Evelyn also says that he does need some help with reading the science content and comprehending what he reads. He would benefit from tutoring. She also states that he never turns in homework. Elijah has expressed that he does not want to bother his mom because she’s often working and tired when she gets home, so he just tells her he does not have any.

Evelyn has offered to put Elijah in the afterschool tutoring program to help increase his reading comprehension. Elijah’s mom is more than happy to help her son, so she suggests a reward chart at home. Evelyn loves that idea so much she will start one with Elijah at school as well. Every time he brings back completed homework he will get a sticker. ‘X’ number of stickers will result in a prize.

Weeks have passed since the meeting between Teacher Evelyn and Elijah’s mom. Elijah has been receiving tutoring and Evelyn has noticed a difference in his comprehension in all subjects. He has also been bringing back his homework at least 3 days out of 5 in the school week. They are working towards making it all five days consistently.
