A Teacher Does Not Assess School Context

Principal, James, encourages teachers to reach out to parents and learn more about their home dynamics. He needs the full picture of why students entering primary school are not showing signs of school readiness even though 50% of them went preschool.

Teacher, Abigail, is behind on inputting her data into the Student Profile. She is supposed to be reaching out to parents via their preferred method of contact about an invitation for a classroom visit. However, Abigail does not understand why it’s required and eventually all the students will be on the same academic level.

James never receives Abigail’s student data related to her student’s home life, preschool attendance and all assessments given in the beginning of the school term. He is not able to use this information in the decision-making process for goals in the School Improvement Plan. Principal, James, also does not know how to support parents and the community if he does not understand what home looks like for his students.

Teacher, Abigail, did not engage the parents to support their child’s learning or show how the school does and will support their child even with barriers. The School Improvement Plan does not reflect the community in her classroom and parents did not get to be involved in the process. Abigail did not understand why it was required but missed that by having those conversations with parents she would have learned that 80% of her students did not attend a preschool. They were also missing the language and literacy component from lack of access to books and conversations at home.
