Fostering Community Leadership Through Engaged Parents

Principal, Dan, has worked with the school team to develop a high-expectations school culture. The team have identified and reinforced values, behaviour expectations and character traits that are important to the school. These have been shared with students and reinforced in lessons, during parades and at morning assemblies.

Despite the efforts, parents are not attending the sessions and they are not supporting the school values at home with students. Dan would like to engage parents in supporting their child’s education by inculcating the school values.

The school team actions this by sending home newsletters, preparing and promoting open classroom days and inviting parents to assemblies where they can celebrate the student’s positive behaviours. During these events, the school team celebrates and reinforces the school values: Responsible, Respectful, Hard Worker.

These events have generated interest and data collected showed a 60% increase in parent participation and leadership in the school community. Additionally, 82% of parents voiced their support for the school vision and expectations (through a survey and the school forum).

This parental support has also improved student behaviour and attendance. Principal Dan celebrates these improvements at morning assemblies and staff meetings and posts data on the community boards for parents as well.
