A Teacher Works in Isolation

Nadia is an engaging teacher. She has a superb way with students and maintains communication with parents. However, she prefers to work in isolation and does not share resources or strategies with her colleagues in professional development discussions. She is quiet and does not add her thoughts to professional conversations. She also does not offer to participate in observing best practices of other teachers.

Instruction coach Claire has noticed Nadia’s behaviour and has discussed it with the leadership team. They have decided to discuss expectations, the school vision and the importance of reflection on teaching practice in a series of mini professional development sessions. Through specific team-building and focused reflection on teaching practice, there is a better understanding of peer collegiality. These sessions have created a positive working culture among the staff and an understanding of the expected behaviours of teachers.

Following these sessions, Claire has paired teachers for observations and professional discussions on the strategies applied.

The result is that Nadia has a clearer understanding of her important role in sharing best practices with others and is more confident in her skills. She is now ready to be a part of the school’s progress in the SIP.
