What Happens When Technique Is Delivered With Fidelity
The technique
Effective teaching requires teaching students to mastery. Teaching to mastery means teaching students until they are confident and competent with the content they have learned.
What it achieves
Teaching to mastery with fidelity ensures student learning is maximised so that they are progressing at the optimum rate and are on track or catching up.
More detail
Teaching to mastery is dependent on students being firm on each step before moving onto the next step.
When students are taught to mastery:
- they are at least 70 per cent correct on anything that is being introduced for the first time
- they are at least 90 per cent correct on parts of the lesson that deal with skills and information introduced earlier in the program sequence
- the rate of errors is low enough that the teacher is able to complete the lesson in the allotted time
- they are at least 85 per cent first-time correct on independent work
- they are 100 per cent firm on all the tasks and activities by the end of the lesson
- they achieve 90 per cent (or meet specific program criteria) performance on mastery tests.
