What Happens when Teaching to Mastery is not Delivered with Fidelity

When teachers do not teach to mastery, student learning is not maximised, students are not progressing at the optimum rate, not catching up and are falling behind.

What Happens

The Problem is Compounded

When students are not firm on each exercise before doing independent work, the group does not meet the criterion of eighty-five per cent first-time correct. The teacher should reteach and have students correct their errors.

When teachers do not teach to mastery over several lessons, students do not pass their mastery tests. The teacher must remediate and retest students on all parts of the mastery test that were not passed. This slows down lesson progress.

The problem can be further compounded when students are not brought to mastery over time. The whole group may need to be taken back ten lessons or more which stops lesson progress and students are not on track or catching up.
