Allows the Teacher to Check for Mastery to Inform Teaching Decisions

David is teaching his Year 6 Physics class about electrical diagrams. He directs students to look at the photo and electrical diagram. He asks the question, ‘Does this photo and electrical diagram belong together? Why or why not?’ David allows his students time for a pair-share before selecting three or four non-volunteers to answer the question. He listens to his students’ answers and the way they correct or elaborate on each other’s answers. Based on their responses, David is confident that they are firm in their understanding of the rule and are able to apply it with confidence. He knows his students are at mastery and can move on to the next exercise in the lesson.
