What Happens when Technique is not Delivered with Fidelity

When the teacher does not use engagement techniques, they are not embedding practices to ensure active participation of all students. Lessons become teacher centred and teacher talk increases. The teacher provides uninterrupted instruction that can be difficult for students to retain and recall during independent work. Without the use of engagement techniques, the teacher does not know whether students are firm in their understanding, so cannot make informed decisions about their teaching.

The Problem is Compounded

Students do not have the opportunity to deepen and consolidate their understanding as they are not being asked to say, write or do something with the lesson content. They do not become confident in their ability to apply their knowledge, develop and verbalise ideas or learn from the responses of others. Information is less likely to committed to long-term memory when lessons are not interactive. This can result in gaps in students’ learning or difficulty in retrieving knowledge in independent work or on assessments.
