Scenario: Does Not Start the Year Strong to Entrench Values, Rules and Routines
Step 1: At the start of the school year, Principal, Aaron, encourages his teachers to immediately start on academic content. He thought that spending time teaching rules and routines would take away from students’ academic progress.
Step 2: The teachers begin the school year with their students with no shared understanding of the rules and routines expected of them. Each teacher creates their own plan but does not spend much time, if any, teaching their rules and routines to students, as Aaron has directed.
Step 3: Teachers are unaware of what the other teachers expect from student behaviour, and the students do not know what to expect from one teacher’s classroom to the next.
Step 4: The confusion and uncertainly leads to an increase in inappropriate behaviour. These behaviours create constant interruptions in the classroom, distracting students from instruction and slowing down their academic progress.
