Students Build Confidence

Teacher Anne is teaching a chemistry lesson to her Year 6 class. She is outlining the success criteria and provides definition of important words: describe and sort. She says to the class, ‘Read with me.’ Together the class reads, ‘Describe means we use words to say what something is like so that someone else can understand what we are talking about.’

Anne checks for understanding, ‘What does describe mean?’ (Signal)

Students read the definition in a choral response using the same pace, tone and volume as when they read with Anne.

Anne repeats this process for the definition of the word ‘sort’. Her students now have a clear understanding of what these words mean and will know what they are being asked to do when they appear later in the lesson. This builds students’ confidence as they are firm in their understanding and will be able to apply their knowledge when it is required.
