Principal Sets the Direction of the School

Principal Glenn is preparing for a rollout of leading parent engagement with the teaching team throughout the year. The school team has identified values, behaviour expectations and character traits, and team members are expected to teach and reinforce these among students, parents and the teaching team throughout the year. Prior to an open house with parents, Glenn reminds teachers to invite parents into their classrooms and explain the common practices, routines and behaviour expectations.

During the open house event, Glenn observes a teacher, Isabel, who has not seen a parent outside the classroom and has avoided conversation with them. Instead, Isabel has continued with the class and has not invited them in.

After the open-house session, Glenn takes time to organise a professional conversation with Isabel about how she can increase her engagement with parents by ensuring she communicates effectively and regularly with parents and is welcoming to parents who attend and participate in school events.

Glenn makes a note to observe Isabel the following week to review her implementation of the technique. In that observation, Glenn notes that Isabel is now being more proactive when parents are in the building. She smiles and invites them into the classroom and is working on developing positive a positive relationship with parents.
