Teachers Celebrate Student Success
The Year 6 teaching team are doing a unit on character strengths. They are asked to identify how they could use their strengths to help their community.
Student, Tim, who is usually uninterested in school, is very intrigued by this project and brainstorms with his classmate Erik on some of the issues and together they find areas where they can support their community. Together they decide that the elders need to be more active. Tim and Erik develop a plan of action and begin working on the project by contacting people in the community, arranging a time and place to meet with them.

They plan different levels of activities for the members of the community who may come. On the day of the event, they are surprised that over 20 people were in attendance.
The activity was a success, and everyone really enjoyed being active together. Tim and Erik were required to collect evidence of their learning throughout the project and presented their work to their classmates. Their teacher, Scott, displayed the students’ work along with photos and their reflections on a board outside the classroom.
During the parent–teacher interviews, the teachers asked students to attend and explain their learning to their parents. Tim’s parents were very proud of his effort in supporting their community both inside and outside of the classroom. The parent–teacher evening was a very positive event. Tim’s parents are now inquiring about school and are asking how they can support Tim at home.
