Scenario: The Impact of Not Maintaining Accurate Records and Preparing Data

Scenario: The Impact of Not Maintaining Accurate Records and Preparing Data
Step 1: At the beginning of Term One, Teacher Nick notices a student in his class is struggling with distraction and is unable to complete his daily work. Nick chooses not to record his observations on this student because he feels he will just remember each incident.
Step 2: During the PHET meeting, Nick brings up his concerns about the student. The rest of the team request that Nick bring forward anecdotal notes or assessment data to support his claims. They explain to Nick that this information will better help the team in determining the appropriate interventions.
Step 3: Unfortunately, Nick is not able to produce this information to the team. Since he hadn’t recorded any of the incidents that occurred and did not complete a Student Observation form, there was inadequate data to move forward with an intervention.
Step 4: The student did not receive an intervention this time around. However, Nick did learn the importance of keeping accurate notes. He learned that this was especially important in discussions about at-risk students. In the next meeting, Nick produces the material required for an intervention to be put into place.
