Scenario: The Impact of Not Observing Discrepancies

Scenario: The Impact of Not Observing Discrepancies
Step 1: Teacher Celine has been invited to participate on the Positive High-Expectations Team. During a classroom observation, the instruction coach notices that her students are being disrespectful towards one another when Celine isn’t watching.
Step 2: When confronted about this during a meeting with the coach, Celine admits that she did not notice the disrespectful behaviour because it was happening during independent work time and unstructured times.
Step 3: During the PHET meeting, the coach feels it necessary to bring this up to the rest of the team because it demonstrates a discrepancy with the school values and Behaviour Plan. Since Celine hadn’t noticed the behaviour herself, her contribution to the conversation was limited.
Step 4: Going forward, Celine knows that she needs to be more observant of her students during unstructured or independent work times. She learns the nonverbal cues to look for in her students that may indicate an issue is occurring. She also learns how to intervene when disrespectful language is used between students.
