The Principal Fails to Check Professional Learning Progress: Scenario
Teacher Elijah has been given the green light by his instruction coach to video record himself showing mastery in verbal cues during his choral reading lesson. He sets up the video camera and presses play. Elijah smoothly instructs the class to choral read on his verbal cue “Get ready.” They read the text together. He demonstrates it several times in the video and the participation of the students was high because they understood what they were supposed to do.
When he was complete, he turned off the camera and put it onto his computer. During his break, he went to upload the video into his Professional Learning Plan but was interrupted by a last-minute meeting of a parent who had come in to discuss concerns for her child.
Elijah never uploaded the video for assessment or became certified. At the end of the term when the Professional Learning Plan was to be complete, Principal Leo asked Elijah into his office to discuss the lack of completion.
Elijah feels frustrated because he is just being told now that his Professional Learning Plan was incomplete. The principal did not manage professional learning competently and conduct bi-weekly checks to see whether the teachers were on track or needed more support.
