Implementing Strategies to Collaborate with Parents on Student Improvement Goals

Principal, Dan, is implementing the SIP for the school year with two goals in mind. First, he wants to work with teachers on delivering effective instruction and on reaching out to parents to play an active role in their child’s learning journey.

To get to the parent community and understand their needs regarding their child’s education, Dan creates a parent survey at the start of the year. The responses will guide the school team in developing parent engagement strategies set in the school-improvement plan.

Teachers receive training on the engagement cycles in the eight cycles of school practice to help set goals for parental communication in each classroom. Teacher, Gina, has decided that her goal is to follow up with parents whose child is absent on that same day and to hold two parent conversations a day. In these conversations, she discusses the student’s successes, their improvement, and if needed, strategies for parents to support their child’s progress.

Gina follows the training she has received on how to build a school culture. She knows the importance of building influencing relationships with parents in support of their child’s education.

As the year progresses, Gina has developed a strong connection with her students’ parents with these simple strategies. As a result, students have improved their attendance by 56% overall and academic targets are met with more consistency. Gina has successfully collaborated with parents and the community on shared school and student improvement goals.
