The Teacher Shows Student Work to a Parent
Shannon has made a ‘Wall of Fame’ for students who have exceeded the learning expectations during independent practice. By having a designated spot for her students, it promotes a standard of work and engages parents during the classroom visit.

Her ‘Wall of Fame’ has examples of students’ work on a particular science assignment. The assignment showcases students’ understanding of living and non-living objects by sorting pictures into the two categories. To qualify on the ‘Wall of Fame’, the students had to do the science sort with little to no help from the teacher and with mastery.
Crystal, a parent, has come in for a parent classroom visit. Her daughter, Tanner, has really been struggling in school specifically in science and she wants to discuss ways to support her. She notices on the wall Tanner’s picture of living and non-living objects. Shannon explains to Crystal the structure of the program and Tanner’s ability to apply what she has learned in the independent practice portion. She even brags that Tanner was able to come up with additional non-living objects that they did not discuss.
Crystal gives Tanner a hug and tells her how proud she is. Crystal asks what she can do at home to further encourage Tanner’s love of science.
