The Teacher Teaches Expected Behaviours

Explain the impact on this topic

When the teacher sets up classroom for teaching it allows the teacher to teach and reinforce expected behaviours from the students. They are closely monitoring students while moving around the classroom using proximity to promote expected behaviours. Teachers assign seats paying close attention to those who need more support or who should not be seated next to each other. They can strengthen each student’s learning by seating them in an appropriate place.

Explain how it works

The teacher:

  • sets up the classroom to be able to see whole class and easily move around the classroom
  • listens closely to individual students during group responses and use proximity to encourage appropriate behaviour
  • assigns seating to ensure students are strategically grouped. This avoids inappropriate behaviours and minimises distractions
  • places lower performing students front and centre, close to the teacher
  • can see which students are following the directions and paying attention
  • reiterates classroom rules and routines to the class to minimise disruption and inappropriate behaviours.

This results in students making standard progress and catching up.
