The Teacher does not Promote Expected Behaviours

When a teacher does not promote expected behaviours teachers and students have a sense of unease as they do not know what may happen at any time.

The teacher:

  • does not set up the classroom to see the whole class or move around easily to listen closely to individual students during group responses and does not use proximity to encourage appropriate behaviour
  • does not place lower performing students front and centre within close proximity to them
  • does not assign seating, meaning that distractions are high, leading to inappropriate behaviours
  • cannot see which students are not following directions and paying attention.

The Problem is Compounded

Students become disengaged from learning. The teacher does not hear all errors, and therefore cannot correct all errors. Learning time is spent by the teacher dealing with inappropriate behaviours. The teacher is not able to frequently praise students who are behaving appropriately. Lessons take longer to teach and not all students meet mastery every day.
