Effective Use of Routines and Expectations

The teacher, Sam, has her class line up quietly before they enter the classroom. When students enter, they store their bags in the designated place and sit in their allocated seat. Sam’s students are sitting up, facing the front, eyes on her and ready to start. Sam instructs students at the end of the row to collect workbooks from the place they are stored. Each students takes their book and passes the pile to the person on their left. This is done quietly and efficiently as Sam has discussed her expectations for the distribution and collection of lesson materials. All students know what their responsibilities are and how to perform them. Workbooks are distributed efficiently, and Sam can begin the lesson. Sam affirms her students, providing positive and specific praise to reinforce their behaviour.
