Embedding Routines and Behaviour Standards Creates a Positive Learning Environment
Teacher, Ellen, is teaching English to her Year 4 class. They have just finished reading a story together. Ellen asks her class a series of questions to ensure that her students have understood the story. She asks the question to the class before selecting non-volunteers to provide their answers. Ellen knows that the story was challenging for some students, but Ellen’s students feel comfortable providing answers without worrying about making mistakes or what other students will say. Students respectfully express alternate views or elaborate on a previous answer in a way that is affirming for all. By clearly establishing expectations and reinforcing them each lesson Ellen has a learning environment where all students are keen to learn and are respectful of one another. They celebrate each other’s success and support one another in their growth.
