Learning Time is Lost and Students Cannot Make Standard Growth

Impact

When expectations have not been clearly established and routines are ineffective, the classroom appears disorganised. The teacher spends an inordinate amount of time giving and repeating instructions. Transitions between activities or groups are chaotic or slow. Valuable learning time is lost. The teacher becomes a manager of the students and the classroom, rather than the educator who teaches students to mastery.

The Problem is Compounded

When students are not sure what they should be doing, when they should be doing it and don’t have a clear understanding of the process for doing it, learning time is lost. They appear confused or lost and need to be directed. This results in less time to learn, practise and consolidate their understanding.

When lessons are incomplete or progression is too slow, students find it difficult to follow instructional concepts as lessons occur too far apart for ideas to be linked. This affects students’ ability to make standard growth and potentially catch up.
