What Happens When Routines and Expectations are Not Used with Fidelity

Impact

When the teacher does not effectively use routines and expectations, students do not know what to do, when to do it or how to do it. This results in confusion for the students. The teacher must then repeatedly answer questions regarding what they should be doing or managing poor behaviour, instead of teaching the lesson. Without effective routines and expectations, valuable learning is time lost, making it challenging to complete lessons in standard time.

The Problem is Compounded

When students do not have a clear understanding about what they need to do and the steps they need to take, they can become confused and require instruction. They become dependent on asking questions or on teacher direction to prompt them to act. Students become passive in their learning and are disempowered. Learning time is lost due to ineffective routines, slow transitions and poor behaviour. Students are unable to make standard growth.
