Teacher Plans a New Rule and Routine
Jenny has noticed that the students in her class have very messy desks. She decides to address this problem behaviour of messy desks by adding a classroom rule to their Values, Routines and Rules Chart. Jenny turns that negative behaviour of messy desks into a positive, memorable rule or routine for her classroom. Her replacement behaviour for ‘messy student desks’ is to:
- keep desks tidy
- store pencils and erasers in table baskets.
This rule follows the OMPUAA guidelines (Observable, Measurable, Positively Stated, Understandable, Always Applicable and Aligned). This rule also aligns with the school-wide value, ‘We are responsible’. Jenny plans how to explicitly teach this new rule to make sure her students can develop and apply the skill and eventually master it.
