Johnny is an experienced teacher and has set up a book corner in an area of his classroom. He sends a group of students to do some reading in the book corner. Two of the students are very engaged in independent reading and sit quietly, reading their books. The two other students in the book corner are throwing books at one another. One of the books hits one of the students reading quietly, and they are unable to continue with their learning due to all the distractions. If Johnny had set up rules and routines around the correct use of the book corner, students would be clear on how to use the book corner correctly and what to do if a student is not following directions. Lesson time would be maximised, and student learning would increase.
