What Happens When Teaching Rules and Routines is Not Delivered with Fidelity
When teaching staff do not explicitly teach school values, expected behaviours, rules and routines, students do not know what is expected of them or how to do activities and tasks. This disrupts learning time with behaviour issues and time spent repeating instructions. Teachers are unable to positively reinforce students which leads to low morale.
The Problem is Compounded
The teacher:
- does not establish predictable patterns and activities for students to follow
- does not positively reinforce expected behaviours or motivate students to follow the expectations
- does not display posters explaining rules and routines
- does not use specific, positive feedback
- does not tie classroom rules to schoolwide values
- does not help students achieve mastery in a calm environment.
