Students Are Confident, Engaged Learners and Have Appropriate Behaviour

For positive motivation strategies to be effective, the teacher needs to be clear in their expectations. Students must know exactly what is expected of them in terms of producing work and behaviour. When students meet mastery goals, teachers celebrate with students. This cycle of setting goals, working towards goals, and celebrating goals creates students who are confident, engaged learners, and cultivates a classroom community that is positive and celebrates continuous learning.

How It Works

  • When students experience success, they are motivated, behave appropriately, feel safe to contribute, engage in class, and build confidence in their ability to learn and achieve.
  • Teachers check independent work daily to provide students with evidence that they are progressing in the program. Students who pass assessments on the first try are provided with the same evidence. This builds students’ confidence in their learning capabilities.
  • When a teacher completes lessons in the standard time, students are actively engaged, receive feedback, and can apply what they have learned to new contexts. They also experience success and gain confidence in their ability to learn.
  • Students feel empowered to answer correctly and use accurate language to show their learning. Students who engage with their learning are confident and experience academic success which, in turn, motivates them.
