Students are not Confident, Engaged Learners and Do Not Display Appropriate Behaviour
Students need to be involved in the goal creation, see progress towards goal mastery, and be excited to celebrate when they achieve their goals. When students are not working towards a goal that motivates them, they are not engaged. When they do not see the progress they are making towards the goal, they are not confident that the goal can be achieved. When they are not confident or engaged, they will look to avoid work or disengage from instruction, creating behaviour problems.
The Problem is Compounded
- When students do not know what to do or how to do it, they become distracted, distract others or behave inappropriately. They are not focused on learning and are not confident learners.
- Teachers do not set lesson progression goals to motivate students to focus and engage in the lesson.
- Students do not experience success and are not motivated, leading to inappropriate behaviour. Ultimately, they do not feel safe contributing or engaging in class and do not build confidence in their ability to learn and achieve.
- The teacher does not provide students with evidence that they are learning and progressing by checking independent work daily. Students do not build self confidence in their learning as they do not pass assessments on the first try.
- When lessons are not completed in the standard time, students become confused, frustrated and bored, and disengage from their learning; this affects their ability to experience success and gain confidence in their ability to learn.
- Students do not feel empowered as they cannot answer correctly, nor do they have the language to accurately show their learning. They are not engaged in their learning, are not confident, and do not experience academic success. Thus, they are not motivated.
