Classification Exercises

The ‘Classification Track’ starts in lesson one and continues throughout the program.

The Process

  • Introduce the expectations and content for language instruction.
  • Say; “Let’s start with a rule for containers. Listen: if it’s made to hold things, it’s a container. Say the rule. Get ready!” and signal (hand-drop). Say; “Again, Say the rule. Get ready!” and signal (hand-drop).
  • Say; “Listen: if something is made to hold things, it is a container. If something is not made to hold things, it is not a container. A box is made to hold things, so what do you know about a box?” and signals (hand-drop). Repeat the question using the following items: a cup, a basket, a suitcase and a knife.
  • Say; “I’ll name some things. You tell me if they are a container. Listen: a log. Tell me: container or not container” and signal (hand-drop). Repeats the question using the following items: a bike, a cabinet, a jar and a pencil.

Objectives

  • Teaching names of common classes, such as furniture and vehicles.
  • Preparing students for definitions exercises, which start with naming the class for the object to be defined.
  • Teaching the relationship between smaller and larger classes of objects.
  • Showing Students that belonging to the same class is one way that objects are the same.
