Corrections in Definitions Exercises

Students may struggle to name a class for an object being defined, or to say something that is true only for that subject.

Correct using ‘lead, test, re-test’.

 Model Lead TestRe-test
“Listen. ‘Corn’ is food that grows on ears”.1. Say the part of the definition that tells the class for corn.

“Corn is food”.

2. Say the part of the definition that tells something that is true of only corn.

“Corn grows on ears”.
“Your turn”.

Say the definition for ‘corn’.

“‘Corn’ is food that grows on ears”.
 Starting over.

All responses down to error was made and beyond.

The Process

  • If students name a class t hat is too large, the teacher says, ‘Name a smaller class’ and leads students to the answer given in the book.
  • If students struggle with saying something that is true only of corn, the teacher acknowledges that the characteristic given describes corn, but notes that it describes other foods as well; the teacher asks students to name other foods that share that characteristics and leads students to naming a characteristic true only of corn.
  • If students continue to struggle with naming something that is only true of corn, the teacher names characteristics of corn and has the students identify each characteristic as describing only corn.
  • If students struggle with saying the definition, the teacher provides a model, lead, test, retest.
