Positive praise

Teachers motivate students with praise. By recognising students’ efforts, teachers increase students’ awareness of it and amplify the effects of student success.

Teacher recognition is a strong motivator, but the effect of praise also depends on the delivery of praise and the teacher-student relationship. A positive teacher-student relationship with sincere and age-appropriate praise is effective.

Praise is specific and related to the task. Reprimands, nagging and other types of attention given to negative behaviours are minimised.

Siegfried ‘Zig’ Engelmann uses a slogan to represent this saying: ‘Catch them being good’.
