Specific praise

The ratio of praise to negative remarks is at least four positives for every negative.

Teachers problem-solve behavioural and academic issues by asking these questions:

  • Are basic motivation systems in place?
  • Are students placed appropriately to experience success – not too low, not too high?
  • Are students aware of their successes?
  • Are students receiving recognition for success through specific praise and/or rewards?

Example:

You told me all those sounds correctly the first time!

Non-example:
You finally got all those sounds right!

Example:
Awesome! Everybody’s eyes are on the book.

Non-example:
Jimmy, Kate, look at the book.

Example:
Jimmy, Kate, and Julie’s feet are on the floor.

Non-example:
I tell you this every day, put your feet on the floor.

Example:
Wow! Nice reading that story and staying within the error limit.

Non-example:
Good job!
