RMSE-LA 3 pronouns, nouns and

adjectives as parts of speech

Pronouns
as a part of speech

Students begin working with pronouns, as a part of speech beginning in lesson twenty-four by replacing subjects with the appropriate pronouns.

In lesson twenty-five they circle the subject of sentences and write ‘P’ in front of every sentence that has a pronoun for a subject.

In lesson twenty-eight students identify the part of speech for numbered words. The words are either verbs or pronouns. In lesson thirty-one work on identifying verbs and pronouns continues.

Nouns
as a part of speech

After pronouns, students are introduced to nouns beginning in lesson thirty-three. Students have had lots of practice using nouns in their writing.

Nouns are introduced with the rule: nouns name persons, places or things. They are also introduced with the sentence-analysis rule: if the subject of a sentence is not a pronoun, the last word in the sentence is a noun.

In lesson thirty-five students relate nouns and pronouns by drawing lines connecting nouns to their appropriate pronoun. In lesson thirty-eight students identify underlined words in sentences as nouns, pronouns, or verbs. Students are presented with a test for identifying nouns in isolation in lesson forty-one. In lesson forty-three students apply the test for nouns to nouns in the predicate.

Adjectives
as part of speech

Adjectives are the last part of speech taught in RMSE-LA 3 beginning in lesson sixty-one.

The analysis of adjectives is based on the procedure of first finding the noun, then identifying words in front of the noun that tell about the noun. Those words are adjectives.

Later exercises introduce the rule that adjectives tell what kind or how many.
