RMSE-LA 4 punctuation
In RMSE-LA 4 students apply these punctuation rules:
- If a sentence begins with part of the predicate, a comma is needed before the subject of the sentence.
- If two sentences are combined with and or but, there must be a comma before and or but.
- Names of specific products or specific places are capitalised. Deciding whether or not to capitalise the second word of a name is sometimes difficult.
Work on capitalisation of place begins in lesson fifteen. Capitalisation of brand names and specific places begins in lesson sixteen.

The process is:
- The teacher says, ‘Open your textbook to lesson sixteen and find part A. I’ll read what it says in the box. Follow along.’
- The teacher says, ‘The sentences below contain the complete name of places or things. The sentences on the left are not written correctly because the name is not capitalised. The sentences on the right are correct.’
- The teacher reads the sentences that are correct and states which words are capitalised and why.
- The teacher then directs the students to read sentences one through five carefully. If the name in the sentence should be capitalised, they write the number of the sentence and the name as it should be shown.
Turn to page 32 in RMSE-LA 4 Teacher’s Guide. Practise lesson 16 twice with your partner, once with no student errors and once with student errors.
