The Technique

The technique

Effective teaching requires teachers to remediate and retest students on parts failed of mastery tests before moving on to the next lesson.

What it achieves

Remediating and retesting students on failed parts with fidelity ensures student mastery is maximised so that students are progressing at the optimum rate and are on track or catching up.

When the teacher remediates and retests it allows them to bring students to mastery on the skills and content that was tested before moving on to new material. Students need to be brought to mastery on all parts of the mastery test, so their later learning is not impacted. When a teacher remediates and retests students on failed parts of mastery tests, they follow these steps.

  1. Sit students for mastery test or checkout.
  2. Review the results to see if students have not passed all or parts of the test.
  3. Decide if the remediation needs to be done with the whole group or individual students. If twenty-five per cent of the group does not meet criteria on a part or whole mastery test, the group is remediated. If less than twenty-five per cent of the group does not meet criteria on a part or whole mastery test, individuals are remediated.
  4. Remediate students as needed according to the remediation table provided.
  5. Retest students only on the parts they did not meet criteria.
  6. Review results to see if students passed or not.
  7. If students have not passed remediate again and retest.
