Placement Test Directions

You will need:

  • a quiet place in the room where other students cannot hear
  • a copy of the placement test for the student to read from
  • a copy for you with the student’s name. This is where you will record errors made by the student.
  • a timer.

How to begin: (Part one of placement test)

  • Administer part one of the test individually to each student.
  • Tell the student that they are going to read the passage aloud to you and will have two minutes to read.
  • Set the timer for two minutes and mark any errors made on your copy of the test. (Please see Teacher’s Guide, page 29, for additional instructions on what to count as an error).
  • Stop the timer at two minutes and count any unread words as errors.

How to begin: (Part two of placement test)

  • Only administer part two of the test to students who made 0-6 errors on part one.
  • Assemble students in a group if they met the criteria above to move onto part two.
  • Be sure to give students their copy of the test where you recorded the errors for part one.
  • Tell students that they should read the passage again silently and answer the questions in part two.
  • Let students know they have seven minutes to answer the questions.
  • Set the timer for seven minutes. Collect all papers when the time is up.

Refer to the RMT 4 Teacher’s Guide, page 29, to view the guidelines on how to place students according to their placement test scores. On the next page, you are going to view a video on how to administer the placement test for Reading Mastery Signature Edition Year 4. The placement test used in RMT 4 is the same as that from the Reading Mastery Signature strand.
