Vocabulary Words

Just as with the word practice exercises, all vocabulary words appear in the teacher-directed exercises before they are seen in a reading selection. The RMT program teaches the meaning of almost 800 vocabulary words. Students have multiple experiences with these words during teacher-directed exercises, reading selections, and written exercises, which allows students to master vocabulary words.

Below are the different types of vocabulary exercises you will find throughout the program:

  • Oral definitions: For these exercises, the teacher will provide the definition of a word and students will practise using the word in context.
  • Written definitions: Individuals will read the vocabulary word and definition, then the group will answer questions about the word.
  • Using context to predict meaning: Students hear or read a sentence with a new vocabulary word and predict the meaning of the word by using the context of the sentence.
  • Identifying the meanings of common words and phrases: For words that are familiar to students, the teacher calls on students to state what the phrases or words mean.
  • Vocabulary review: These exercises occur during the workbook part of the lesson. Students get additional practise with vocabulary words through various exercises in their workbook.

Here is an example of an oral definition exercise: Exercise 7 from RMT 4 Lesson 16. The teacher tells students the definition before asking the group to apply the word in a sentence.
