Classroom Arrangement

Corrective Mathematics is taught in homogeneous groups based on placement test results. The ideal classroom arrangement has students seated in rows of desks facing the teacher and the board, with the front row of students sitting right in front of the teacher. The teacher teaches a lesson from the front, using the board, while also circulating to monitor the class.  

Lower performers are seated close to the teacher, seating potential behaviour-problem students next to each other is avoided, and better performers are positioned around the periphery, as they need less observation and feedback.  (Refer to the Seating Arrangement Poster for large group instructions. Click the link)

This arrangement allows the teacher to monitor all the students. Here are some active monitoring suggestions: 

  • Catch softly-spoken students’ responses and provide feedback effectively.  
  • Scan several students to check whether they are following the instructions and are on the right page in their workbooks. 
  • Walk among the students as they are responding or working in their workbooks to ensure they are tracking along, reading the questions, and writing their answers.
