Placement Test Guidelines

Placement tests measure students’ mathematical skills to place them in the appropriate Corrective Mathematics modules and lessons. These tests guide student grouping and help teachers identify students’ skills deficits, allowing them to provide targeted instructions for relevant skill mastery. A detailed explanation of the test is found in the Series Guide on page 25.

Where to start:

  • To begin the Corrective Mathematics program, choose the right Placement Test to identify the module and lesson for students.
  • All tests are written tests and may be administered individually or in groups.
  • An oral Addition Pre-skill Test is administered individually for students with multiple errors in the Addition module placement test or the addition portion of the Comprehensive Placement Test. This helps identify those students who are not sufficiently prepared for any module in the Corrective Mathematics program.
  • Students who struggle on the placement test but have previously done well in the mathematics portion of any standardized achievement test are re-evaluated after a week or two of instruction.
  • If the same students perform exceptionally well in the program, the placement test is re-administered. Skipping to a later lesson or to a more advanced module might be indicated.
  • Older students struggling with story problems in the Addition module test are placed in the Subtraction module instead.
