Direct Instruction Overview

Expressive Writing 1–2 is a structured writing program that improves students’ writing ability. It is an evidence-based Direct Instruction writing (English) program that significantly improves the writing performance of a wide range of students from grades 4 to 12. The program comprises Level 1 and Level 2.

  • Scripted Instruction – This includes step-by-step explicit instructions of what the teacher does and says. This keeps instructional language consistent for students.
  • Signals – A signal tells students when to respond.
  • Pacing – Lessons are delivered at a perky pace with 10 to 14 responses per minute.
  • Motivation – Affirmations and specific, positive praise are part of each lesson’s presentation.
