The Students and Program Structure

Expressive Writing 1–2 programs are effective for all primary and secondary students. Students start with whichever level program they are placed in, with the majority beginning at Level 1 and then progressing to Level 2. However, those with the appropriate requisite skills start directly at Level 2.

  • Expressive Writing 1 is intended for students who have not had previous writing instruction or lack the requisite language and reading skills in sentence construction, writing continuity, grammar and punctuation, and structure to write successfully.
  • Expressive Writing 2 is for students who have completed Expressive Writing 1 and/or can demonstrate ability in language patterns and sentence construction. These students may also still struggle with clarity, use of varied sentences, punctuation, and grammar.

The table below shows an overview of each level of the Expressive Writing 1–2 program:

Expressive Writing Program LevelNumber of LessonsTime frame for each lessonStructure of a lesson
Level 1Fifty-five lessons including five mastery tests at lesson 15, 30, 40, 50, and 55.Forty-five-minute period daily should be sufficient. However, this also varies depending on the duration students take to complete various exercises. Two basic parts in each lesson:
a. Skill part: three to five exercises to teach specific skills and/or sub-skill.
b. A passage writing exercise: To apply all the (sub) skills learned.
Level 2Ten pre-program lessons and 50 regular lessons.
