Writing Assessment Skills
NAPLAN data collected from 2011 to 2019 shows that student achievement in writing in Australian schools is below international standards. Writing lessons are specifically designed to develop the skills needed to improve student outcomes in writing.
Slide Layer – Skills
Writing lessons provide students with the necessary skills to be able to write on-demand using:
- a range of genres
- grammatically correct sentences
- a broad range of correctly spelled words
- correct punctuation.
Slide Layer – Text types
Writing lessons teach students to write and create four text types:
- recount
- narrative
- information report
- persuasive.
Students write texts in each of the four text types in each year level, to build their familiarity as they develop their skills on the sentence level. There are slight differences in Year 3 and Year 5 – the NAPLAN testing years – in which students will focus more on the text types that they will encounter in NAPLAN testing.
