Teaching Vocabulary Exercises

The Process:

To teach vocabulary exercises effectively, the process is:

  • Pace group-response tasks. Increase the pause before signalling students to answer. Students often need think time to figure out the response.
  • Make sure individual responses are heard by the group. For many of the questions about new vocabulary only one student gives the answer. The teacher may have to repeat the students’s answer to make sure the entire group hears the response.
  • Provide extra review for troublesome words. Take note of the vocabulary words that are troublesome for students after two teacher-direct exercises. Review these words in subsequent lessons and at other times during the school day.
  • Accept all correct student responses. Sometimes students give a correct word meaning that is different from the meaning given in the vocabulary exercise. Accept all correct definitions and observe that some words have several meanings.
