Attention Signal

Teachers use an ‘attention signal’ to refocus students after an activity. For example, after students have shared with their partner, the teacher needs to regroup students to get an answer.

The use of signals helps to clarify expectations and decrease transition time. A ‘call-and-response signal’ is efficient and effective. Students must stop talking and make the response. Effective signals gain attention and ensure students are physically paying attention to the teacher.
