The technique

Signals are used in effective teaching whenever a group response is required, to give students a clear indication of when they should respond. This enables each student to give the teacher an independent answer, while responding as a group.

Using signals:

  • increases the chances of all students initiating an independent response
  • allows all students to practise the task
  • builds students’ confidence in their learning abilities
  • increases interaction in the lesson
  • increases student focus and active participation in the lesson
  • enables the teacher to monitor every student
  • allows the teacher to listen attentively for errors and remediate incorrect responses
  • allows the teacher to identify students who need additional help.

When students answer together on signal, the teacher can quickly check for mastery because every student initiates their own response. As there are no leaders or followers, each student must demonstrate that they are able to answer correctly and with confidence.
