Strategy in Action: Model, Lead, Teach
There are a variety of modelling techniques that instructional coaches can use to provide reflection and practice, and to provide a model of effective teaching techniques in the classroom.
Modelling Technique | Description | Uses |
Refocus Teaching | The Instruction Coach takes over part of the teacher’s job while the teacher does something else. | A teacher is feeling overwhelmed with the amount of new information they need to learn. With this strategy, the teacher can focus on one area at a time. |
Duet Teaching | The Instruction Coach teaches an exercise and then the teacher teaches the next part. | The teacher needs help incorporating a small group reading lesson. The Instruction Coach models best practices for small group learning and then the teacher teaches the next group. |
Taking Turns | The Instruction Coach and teacher collaborate on an exercise. The IC is responsible for one part of the exercise, and the teacher teaches the next part. | The coach delivers the lesson opener, and then the teacher takes over to provide the explicit instruction. |
Take Over | The Instruction Coach takes over the entire lesson due to high student error rates, student behaviour problems, etc. Model all or part of the lesson to help the teacher regain control of the class and lesson. | Only do this if the coach is sure they can solve the problem and bring the students to mastery. |
Watch Me, Watch You | The Instruction Coach takes over the lesson due to a particular issue and has the teacher record data on the lesson or video tape the lesson. Later, the IC and the teacher review the data or the video and discuss the results. |
