School Team Builds a Culture of Collaboration Around Continuous Improvement: Scenario
Principal Joseph wants his school team to adopt a culture of continuous improvement. He uses school professional conversations with his staff to share successes and talk through challenges. He notices that teachers are increasingly willing to share their data, especially data that presents a challenge.

Instruction Coach Katie holds coaching conversations and asks teachers to bring student data. As she meets with Teacher Lynn, they identify a challenge. Lynn’s data indicates that a small cohort of students is struggling to master concepts at the appropriate rate. Lynn tells Katie that she struggles to figure out how to remediate students who are not mastering content while still keeping the other students at pace. Katie suggests that Lynn bring that challenge to the next school professional conversation.

At the next school professional conversation, Lynn shares her data and the challenge. The school team brainstorms some solutions, which Lynn brings back to her classroom. Joseph also brings Lynn’s data and challenge to the next discussion with his peer school and communicates this information back to Lynn. When Joseph meets with Lynn, he praises her for her continuous reflection and how her learning is supporting the entire school’s growth.
