Use Data to Make Informed Decisions

School teams use evidence to identify successes they can share with peer schools. Using data to identify successes allows the team to provide objective analysis about successes and what happened, as well as how it impacted teaching practice and student outcomes. School teams also use evidence to identify challenges. Using data to identify challenges allows teams to objectively describe the challenge and the change they would like to see.

The Process

The teacher and instruction coach:

  • collect and track school or classroom data daily depending on their role at the school
  • have accurate and timely data that can be analysed and actioned in the same week
  • regularly examine data paying attention to patterns of success and difficulty
  • use data to inform decisions about instruction, professional learning and school improvement
  • reflect on how their professional learning impacts student learning and work out which techniques and practices they need to improve to increase student growth.

The principal or instruction coach:

  • examines the data to identify patterns of success and challenges
  • reflects on how their professional learning impacts student learning and what they need to improve to increase student growth.

In the next slide, you will watch a school leader discuss how they improve teaching practice.
