The School Team does not Participate in Collegial Conversations

When the school team do not participate in collegial conversations, they are not engaged in regular conversations about their practice and how to improve. They do not develop the skills to discuss successes and challenges with peer schools.

The Problem is Compounded

The principal:

  • does not encourage collaboration and collegiality across the teaching and leadership teams
  • does not share school improvement data openly
  • does not acknowledge successes at staff meetings
  • focuses on negatives or challenges at staff meetings.

The instruction coach:

  • does not encourage collaboration and collegiality across the teaching team
  • does not forge a unique mindset across teaching team members
  • does not acknowledge improvement or use the knowledge and skills of experienced teachers.

The teaching team:

  • do not welcome observations and visits to their classroom
  • do not take on feedback, coaching and training for their professional practice
  • do not share techniques and strategies that demonstrate improvement with peers
  • do not feel comfortable asking for assistance from experienced peers or leadership
  • do not observe effective teaching techniques delivered by a peer who has mastered the technique or practice.
